Electrospun Nanofibrous Mats/Membranes for Filtration and Separation/Purification Applications

Low cost and high efficiency methods for water purification have attracted growing research interests.Membrane filtration/separation processes provide important approaches for water purification.It is important to note that membrane filtration/separation processes are generally able to operate with substantially less energy consumption than conventional thermal filtration/separation processes.In this talk,electrospun nanofibrous mats/membranes for water purification will be presented in terms of microfiltration,ultrafiltration,nanofiltration,and reverse osmosis;and these mats/membranes exhibit superior performance(i.e.,high rejection fraction,large flux value,low operating pressure,and low degree of fouling).Additionally,surface-functionalized electrospun nanofibrous mats/membranes as innovative separation media for purification of biological products(e.g.,proteins)will also be presented;such mats/membranes mitigate the concern of high-pressure drop with elevated flow rate and minimize the slow intra-particle diffusion required for traditional resin-bead separation,thus allowing for much faster processing time and significantly reduced liquid waste volume.
