Prognostic value of Bmi-1 expression in human epithelial ovarian cancer

Objectives: The aim of this study was to explore the role of Bmi-1 as a prognostic biomarker in epithelial ovarian cancer(EOC). Methods: Bmi-1 expression was assessed in 82 EOC tissues and 10 control tissues using immunochemistry. Statistical analyses were performed to investigate the associations between Bmi-1 expression and clinicopathological characteristics as well as survival time. Results: Positive Bmi-1 expression was detected in 87.8%(72/82) of EOC tissues and significantly higher expression of Bmi-1 was observed in EOC than in benign ovarian tumor tissues(P < 0.01).Cox regression analyses revealed that higher Bmi-1 level was significantly associated with poorer overall survival in patients with EOC(mean overall survival, 45.4 vs. 69.3 months) than those with benign ovarian tumors. Moreover, high Bmi-1 expression was an independent predictor for prognosis(HR= 2.212, 95% CI = 1.091-4.482, P < 0.05) in EOC patients. This was further confirmed by survival analysis based on Bmi-1 levels from a large patient cohort(1582 cases) derived from The Cancer Genome Atlas(TCGA) and Gene Expression Omnibus(GEO). Conclusions: High Bmi-1 expression is positively associated with metastastic disease and poor prognosis in EOC.
