Adopting boundary paradigm with eye tracking technology, we wanted to investigate whether the linguistic category of a two-character Chinese string affects how the second character of that string is processed in the parafovea during reading. Boundary paradigm means there is an invisible boundary in the sentence. When the eyes move across the invisible boundary, the preview word will turn into target word. Experiment 1, we adopted two preview conditions(identical and inconsistent) and three types of word pairs(monomorphemic words, compound words and phrase). We obtained clear preview effects in all conditions but, more importantly, found parafoveal-on-foveal effects whereby a nonsense preview of the second character influenced fixations on the first character. This effect occurred for monomorphemic words, but not for compound words or phrases. Experiment 2, we studied the parafoveal processing of adjective-noun and noun-noun compound word. Again, we obtained clear preview effects in all conditions and larger preview effect for adjective-noun compound word compared to noun-noun compound word. We found marginal significant parafoveal-on-foveal effect for both kinds of words. We conclude that information regarding the combinatorial properties of characters in Chinese is used online to moderate the extent to which parafoveal characters are processed. The results are more consistent with the hypothesis of parallel eye movement control model.
