As the basic unit of urban systems, urban communities is an important way to show the actual development of the urban local areas. Along with the prevalence of the concept of sustainable development on a global scale, planning researchers proposed a lot of research around the relationship between urban form and sustainable development. However, in the field of planning studies, the impact of the elements of the form of sustainable development is not yet clear. Examining the basic level of China's urban development, it's significant to study the relationships between community form and sustainability.
Reviewing the current development of sustainable communities and critically reflecting on compact concept for the applicability of our country, it's clear that the relationship of social sustainability and community form is the core problem to be resolved. With the aim of defining the relationship of social sustainability and community form, urban communities of Dalian has been chosen to make quantitative analysis of the spatial form and social sustainable level of urban communities through space syntax theory, and finally prove that diversity is an important factor to improve the social sustainability. Therefore, this research include five parts as followed:1) the study of the status quo, to understand the development of sustainable communities;2) the criticism of urban form, to the reflect on the applicability of the compact concept for China;3) the quantitative assessment of urban communities, to realize the persistent level of social sustainability of communities in Dalian;4) the spatial analysis, to refine the space in favour of social sustainability;5) proposing the strategy, to put forward the community form conducive to social sustainability based on diversity theory. The research methods include the literature review, comparative analysis and social survey ranked by qualitative analysis, and data query, comparative analysis, correlation analysis ranked by quantitative analysis, combined with the analysis technologies of Google Maps, the space syntax analysis and the SPSS analysis to ensure the authenticity and reliability of the data.
The study results show that the functional diversity of local areas and the space diversity of urban communities is an important factor to promote the social sustainability. The functional diversity can be strengthened through the city-level network structure and the space diversity at community level can be strengthened through the semi-open neighborhood structure.
