By the taxonomical study of Valeriana L. in China, we made it clear that there were 30 species, four varietas and two cultispecies in China. Among them ,two new species, two new cultispecies, i.e, Valeriana trifolium B. K. Huang et H. C. Zheng、 V. fenghuangensis B. K. Huang et H. C. Zheng, V. pseudofficinalis C. Y. Cheng et H. B. Chen 'Honghua' and V. pseudofficinalis C. Y. Cheng et H. B. Chen 'Baihua' were discovered, which could be regarded as new medicinal plants. We also fulfilled the studies on intraspecific and interspecific variations of V. pseudofficinalis and its sibling plant on the basis of morphology, cytology, chemistry and molecular genetics studies. The seed germinate rate, chemical components and sedative and hypnotic activities of V. pseudofficinalis were comparably studied. All studies could provide scientific basis for exploitation of resources of Valerian, spp. in China.
