Compilation of history books is a need for cultural consciousness, as the past lives to inspire the present. Entering the21st century, many of China's universities start to work on the university history compilation, and this rush has pushed a great academic achievement in research on the writing of university history books. On one hand, it is expected that university history books keep the records of the school, help the administration and nurture students. On the other hand, university history plays a crucial role and bears much significance for the international cooperation among the world universities. Introducing the university history abroad can help foreign universities learn about China's universities better in a historic view, through the historic episodes that shaped the history and impacted today. This better understanding would help the foreign universities with an objective impression of China university system and culture today, thus to enhance a profound cooperation in between.
To introduce China's university history abroad relies on translation, and involves the culture barriers, since the university history is not only a record of events, but also a narrative text, conveying the culture and spirit as well as the figures' personality and disposition. This thesis would make efforts for an exploration on the translation strategy of China university history books into English. Treating the culture conflicts, this thesis advocates that translation adopt the "interness" thinking to respect the "other" and accept the "alterity" in culture interactions, and that translators use the strategy of "coexistence inter-adjustment" by exporting source culture and absorbing the foreign culture at the same time, where the "interculturality" functions to ultimately achieve a dialogue, so that the cultures of two ends can get to be blended.
This thesis illustrated the philosophic source of "interness" thinking, and elaborated "interculturality" originated from "interness" thinking and its application into translation. Then the thesis applied the interculturality into translation ethics and tentatively put forward the strategy of "coexistence inter-adjustment" for translation into second language. Before the discussion of the strategies of the translation, the thesis made a contrast analysis between China's university history texts and American university historty texts, on the aspects of structure and narration. In the end, the thesis, based on the interculturality principle and adjustment strategies, translated parts of the history book of Northwestern Polytechnical University and provided the analysis of its translation strategies.
With all work, this thesis would tend to prove that the interculturality should be applied into translation ethic to generate the coexistence inter-adjustment strategies, so as to frame a dialogue between the cultural conflicts, and through this inter-dialogue, to ultimately reach a blend containing the two ends. This thesis is an effort for both education and translation, which not only explores the translation issue but also triggers the endeavour in university history research. The university history translation study is of a great significance for world education prosperity.
