据了解，在1979～2013年间，东天山地区陆续发现了十多个岩浆型铜镍硫化物矿床，矿集区范围的持续扩大使得该区受到了地质界的密切关注。

中国地质调查局油气资源调查中心认为，桑植是湘西北页岩气资源富集县，在此首先开钻，对进一步查明全省页岩气成藏地质条件、资源潜力及加快工业开发均具有十分重要的意义。
