British writer Zadie Smith published her fifth novel Swing Time in 2016. The new book has two striking features: 1) Smith for the first time employs the first person narration in her novels; 2) It is a "grand social novel". The interaction of the two is what produces the novel's uniqueness. The change of narrative perspective leads to a shift in the interactive relations between narrative and ethics. This paper, situating self along the axes of time, the other, and ethics, historically examines the narrative ethics embodied in Smith's particularized first person narration, discusses its value in constructing the multifaceted identity politics of contemporary African-British women, and explores Smith's creative aesthetics and their transformation.
