Low protein diet(LPD) is an important element in the comprehensive treatment of chronic kidney disease(CKD).At present, whether the LPD is beneficial in protecting residual kidney function in patients with CKD is debated. In addition, concerns have been raised regarding the effect of LPD on patient nutritional status. This article reviews recent studies on the effects of protein intake on kidney function and the role of LPD in CKD treatment, and summarizes key points in implementing LPD,to improve the quality of dietary management, slow the progression of the disease, and delay dialysis treatment onset in patients with CKD.Our study also provides a reference for dietitians and clinicians to formulate and implement effective diet treatment plans for patients with CKD.
