文摘
The effects of temperature and viscosity on the termination mechanism of radical polymerization, that is, disproportionation versus combination of polymer chain-end radicals, are unambiguously clarified. The disproportiontion significantly increases with increasing viscosity of the reaction medium by lowering temperature or changing solvents. Control of the termination reaction is achieved for the first time; the polystyrene chain-end radical terminates by combination in non-viscous solvents but by disproportionation in viscous media.
