The Inside Cover picture shows the use of acetone,
which can be readily obtained from biomass, for the synthesis of chemicals and fuels using a single simple process. Sustainable and rene
wable alternatives to petroleum are critically needed to fill future gaps in supply of transportation fuels and chemical feedstocks. Fermentation approaches can yield small bio-derived molecules such as acetone and isopropanol; if these can be commercialized
with the same success of cellulosic ethanol, this
