We assessed the status of 144 countries using the SESI (social-ecological status index).
•
Sixty-nine countries have SESI values below the overall average SESI value.
•
These countries are found in Asia and the Americas, but more especially in Africa.
•
We also classified the 144 countries into four social-ecological status groups.
•
The results can be used for communicating country-based social-ecological status.
