New TG setup allows monitoring of clays rehydroxylation quantitatively in-situ. Interaction between the counterion and the dehydroxylated smectite structure controls rehydroxylation. Large counterions and high tetrahedral substitution promote rehydroxylation. The calculated activation energy of rehydroxylation applies to RHX dating of ceramics.
