This paper describes the development of a fiber optic glucose biosensing system for the detection of micromolar levels of transdermal glucose. The system is comprised of an optical fiber with microbeads of BADAN-labeled glucose binding protein at the tip. The optode is attached to a home-built mini-fluorimeter with the necessary optics and electronics. The system is controlled by a tablet PC. Detection of the spontaneous diffusion of μM glucose through an in vitro model skin system was demonstrated.
