The myeloperoxidase-derived oxidant hypothiocyanous acid inhibits protein tyrosine phosphatases via oxidation of key cysteine residues

Protein tyrosine phosphatases (PTPs) are key regulators of protein phosphorylation.

Myeloperoxidase is a major generator of inflammatory oxidants including HOSCN.

HOSCN is shown to inactivate PTPs by oxidation of redox-sensitive Cys residues.

Oxidation involves sulfenic acid or sulfenyl-thiocyanate (RS–SCN) intermediates.
