Fatigue properties of catalyst coated membranes for fuel cells: Ex-situ measurements supported by numerical simulations

Mechanical fatigue durability of catalyst coated membranes (CCMs) is measured.

A finite element based fatigue model is developed for the CCM material.

The maximum tolerable stress of CCM is found to be lower than that of pure membrane.

Temperature cycling is found to be more severe than humidity cycling.

Combined temperature and humidity cycling can significantly reduce fatigue lifetime.
