•: We assessed the validity of the long IPAQ focusing on age and language differences.
•: The IPAQ showed moderate validity against accelerometers.
•: Correlations were highest for vigorous physical activity and for sitting time.
•: We observed only limited sex, age and regional differences regarding validity.
•: However, these do not limit the applicability of the IPAQ in specific sub groups.
