Colorful patterns indicate common ancestry in diverged tiger beetle taxa: Molecular phylogeny, biogeography, and evolution of elytral coloration of the genus Cicindela subgenus Sophiodela and its allies
Molecular phylogeny of Cicindela (Sophiodela) and its allies was investigated.
•
Sophiodela is not related to other members of the genus Cicindela.
•
Sophiodela forms a well-supported clade with Cosmodela and part of Calochroa.
•
They diverged in the Oriental and Sino-Japanese regions in the mid Miocene.
•
Their brilliant coloration reflects common ancestry and habitat adaptation.
