Adaptive planning requires specific arrangements for monitoring and evaluation. The long-term planning horizon and presence of multiple actors pose important challenges. We developed an approach to decide who should monitor what, when and for whom. Key elements are critical assumptions, signposts, future decisions, and reciprocity. Case results suggest an important distinction between technical and political signposts.
