A colorimetric sensing assay based on mercaptosuccinic acid (MSA) modified gold nanoparticles for the detection of Cr3+ selectively was designed.

This technique exhibited high selectivity to Cr3+ over other tested heavy metal ions.

The detection of limit was achieved at 0.6 μM by naked eyes, making naked eye-detection of Cr3+ feasible.
