Surfactants have been used for cleaning contaminated potable water infrastructure. Little is known about the degree surfactants interact with potable water plumbing. One surfactant permeated and damaged all plastics, and EPDM was the most affected. One surfactant was not effective in removing BTEX from PEX plastic pipe. Work needed to identify rapid plumbing decontamination methods has been described.
