We developed a novel biophysical simulation model for semi-arid rangeland.

Mixed-species vegetation was represented through one set of community parameters.

The model was initially calibrated for undegraded rangeland.

Degraded rangeland could be simulated by recalibrating only five parameters.

Good agreement to observed phytomass and WUE was obtained for all degradation levels.
