MdNHX1 is a vacuolar-localized Na+/H+ exchanger. Ectopic expression of MdNHX1 in yeast mutant strain YDR456W rescued the sensitivity to salt stress. Overexpression of MdNHX1 significantly improved salt tolerance in apple calli and Arabidopsis.
