Recruitment of a community based sample of young people (aged 6–14 years) at risk for bipolar I disorder. The ‘at risk’ group was a homogenous sample consisting of offspring of bipolar I disorder with no diagnosed psychopathology or any use of psychotropic medication. The healthy offspring of bipolar parents made more errors than offspring in labeling facial emotions (in particular fear). These factors highlight the generalisability of findings.
