The FE showed moderate genotype × environment interaction, but heat stress around anthesis resulted in a cross-over interaction. The FE of tiller spikes was higher than the one of main stem spikes, so canopy structure may affect the FE value at plot level. Sampling FE at main stem spikes would be a good estimator of FE at plot level in dense canopies. High positive correlation was observed between GN and FE in a wide range of environments, but SDWa and GW were negative correlated with FE.
