We prepare nanoflowers of Cu doped octahedral layered birnessite (Cu-OL-1).

Cu-OL-1 can utilize UV–vis-IR solar energy for catalytic abatement of air pollutant.

We find a conceptually novel photoactivation and solar light-driven thermocatalysis.

We provide a physical insight in the photoactivation.
