Bioaccumulation of Toxoplasma and Cryptosporidium by the freshwater crustacean Gammarus fossarum: Involvement in biomonitoring surveys and trophic transfer
The crustacean Gammarus fossarum is able to accumulate Toxoplasma gondii oocysts.
•
T. gondii is present in tissues of gammarids 5 days post contamination.
•
G. fossarum could be used as a biomonitoring tool for biological contamination.
•
G. fossarum could represent a risk of protozoan trophic transfer.
