•: We examine the inhibition effects of di-carboxylic acids, glutaric acid and malonic acid, on CH₄ and CO₂ hydrates.
•: Shorter carbon chained malonic acid shows a better inhibition effect than longer chained glutaric acid at a same mass fraction.
•: The inhibition effect of malonic acid is comparable with that of tri-ethylene glycol.
