•: TAM up-regulated the expression of GRP78 in MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 cells.
•: Inhibition of GRP78 augmented TAM-induced apoptosis.
•: TAM selectively up-regulated AKT(thr308) levels but not AKT(ser473).
•: Silencing of GRP78 inhibited AKT phosphorylation at thr308 but not at ser473.
•: TAM also induced phosphorylation of GSK3β, a downstream substrate of AKT.
