Ontario farmers would incur only small declines in hay quality by delaying harvest. Hay harvest dates that support grassland bird conservation may differ regionally. June 15–July 15, mean crude protein dropped from 11% to 9.5%, about 0.5% per week. Crude protein fell below 10% one week later on northern study plots. Calcium was adequate for most livestock; extra phosphorus may be required.
