This is the first demonstration that a member of the Alloherpesviridae, KHV, expresses a protein during latency. A viral protein, ORF6 protein, was detected during both latent and productive infection. There are multiple species of different sizes of ORF6 proteins detectable during KHV infection in vitro. Different post-translational modifications of ORF6 protein are suggested during KHV replication. The ORF6 protein without post-translational modification appears to be around 68 kDa in molecular mass. The ORF6 protein may be sumoylated at later stage of productive infection.
