Diabetes-induced metabolic abnormalities increase cellular oxidative stress. Oxidative stress alters the epigenetic machinery. Epigenetics affects Nrf2-mediated signaling, altering mitochondrial homeostasis. Damaged mitochondria accelerates apoptosis, resulting in diabetic retinopathy.
