•: A new fluorescent probe based on coumarin containing l-threonine was designed and synthesized succinctly.
•: The probe has been proven to be high selective and sensitive for the analysis of Ga^3 + in pure water solution.
•: The probe could respond to Ga^3 + in a short time.
•: The association constant between probe and Ga^3 + was found to be 3.7 × 10⁴ M^− 1.
