Although renal disorders are relatively uncommon in adolescents, signs or symptoms of renal disease in adolescents inevitably cause great concern. Adolescents are susceptible to many of the same urinary tract disorders that can present early in childhood.13, 25, 33, 56 and 57 Some disorders, particularly hypertension, occur much more frequently in the adolescent age group. Other disorders, such as orthostatic proteinuria, typically present first in adolescence. This article discusses the most common renal conditions in adolescents: hematuria, proteinuria, and hypertension.
