A novel PMFC was developed for cost-effective Chlorella biomass production. High concentrations (3.5–6.5 g/L) of algae were obtained during continuous operation. Chlorella sustained its community dominance over other competing species. A consortium of photosynthetic organisms may relate to cathodic electron transfer. Energy flow analysis shows this PMFC holds the potential to achieve energy balance.
