Exfoliative cytology may be useful for the detection and monitoring of early changes in smokers. Exfoliative cytology may be useful for the detection and monitoring of early changes in smokers. Chronic smoking decreases the expression of the DNA repair genes MLH1, MSH2 and ATM. This decreased expression may influence DNA repair capacity with consequent carcinogenesis development.
