•: Cucumis melo germplasm were studied for resistance to Pseudoperonospora cubensis.
•: Pathogen isolates with low, medium and high virulence represented eight distinct pathotypes.
•: Race-specificity of interactions between C. melo and P. cubensis was confirmed.
•: Collectively, 45 different reaction patterns were recorded.
•: None of screened C. melo accessions expressed complete resistance to all isolates.
