Development of an innovative integrated model for the simulation of nitrogen dynamics in farmlands with drainage systems using the system dynamics approach

An innovative Nitrogen dynamic simulation model for shallow water table soils with subsurface drainage systems is developed using system dynamics approach. The drainage of nitrate and ammonium concentrations depend on hydraulic flow toward drains (this component has not been properly considered in the modeling process so far). Model performed well in simulating daily, monthly nitrate & ammonium drainage losses and cumulative N-balance. System dynamic approach was found as an effective technique for simulating the complex Water-Soil-Plant-Drainage system in field-scale. This framework can be used to manage fertilizer in agricultural areas.
