The mass ratio of nZVI to AC was tuned to reach the highest removal performance. Treatment methods were used to modify AC’s supporting characteristics. Thermally-treated AC strongly pulled nitrate and phosphate ions towards its surface. Removal efficiencies were improved 1.5 to 3 times more than the original values. Interfering substances had a momentous influence on removal efficiencies (>∓30).
