Sporothrix schenckii Sensu Lato identification in fragments of skin lesion cultured in NNN medium for differential diagnosis of cutaneous leishmaniasis

Leishmaniasis and sporotrichosis endemic areas overlap in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Eighty-nine patients with clinical suspicion of cutaneous leishmaniasis were submitted to biopsy of the lesions. Fragments of the lesions were cultured in Novy-MacNeal-Nicolle (NNN) + Schneider media, which is appropriate for Leishmania parasites. There was growth of Sporothrix schenckii sensu lato in NNN + Schneider media in 98% of the confirmed 64 sporotrichosis cases. NNN + Schneider media can serve as additional tools for the diagnosis of sporotrichosis in areas where both cutaneous leishmaniasis and sporotrichosis are endemic.
