Spit dynamics are reconstructed from cartographic documents since 1675 CE. Historical record is interpreted with a high resolution wave hindcast (1948–2014 CE). Atmospheric circulation patterns account for 50% of wave-induced sediment transport. Increased spit elongation is synchronous on both sides of the North Atlantic Ocean. Spit elongation accelerated in response to positive NAO conditions since 1800 CE.
