pCERC7, a 9712 bp ampicillin resistance plasmid, from a commensal ST131 Escherichia coli carries Tn2::IS4. Plasmids with the pCERC7 backbone or with the same Tn2 insertion have been found globally since the 1970s. pCERC7 contains an oriT and encodes a NikA accessory protein related to those of I-complex plasmids, but no NikB relaxase. Further plasmids have closely related nikA-oriT and nmr resolution sites but nine different associated regions. Replacement of the accessory modules of plasmids in this family is likely mediated by XerC/D recombination at the nmr site.
