Whole blood concentrations were measured in various captive and wild colonies of White-back and Cape griffon vultures. Whole blood lead concentrations had a range of <3–84 µg/dL. 12% of birds had concentrations had higher than expected whole blood lead concentration, when compared to the captive birds. Based on the high whole blood lead concentrations, it is likely that leaded bullets could be the source of exposure.
