Soils developed on 30 years old mine spoil banks were active sinks of C. Pedogenesis promoted the formation of stable aggregates in which C is physically protected. The role of protected C on soil structure is related to land use. Low-temperature ashing (LTA) is a useful technique to assess soil C dynamics.
