Examined the reciprocal, dynamic nature of maternal questions and children’s narrative contributions during book-sharing. Maternal questions and child contributions were contingent on one another. The magnitude of mother question-to-child contribution effects was larger than that of child contribution-to-mother question effect. Reciprocal patterns generalized to dyads from diverse ethnic backgrounds. Cognitive specificity: maternal questions were likely to elicit child contributions at the same cognitive level and vice versa.
