Mitochondrial cholesterol levels are low, but essential for membrane function and for steroid and oxysterol formation. Cholesterol is imported via lipid transfer proteins and mitochondrial multiprotein complexes at membrane contact sites. Many aspects of mitochondrial cholesterol import remain to be elucidated Elevated mitochondrial cholesterol levels are observed in a variety of pathological conditions. High mitochondrial cholesterol is associated with altered respiration, oxidative stress and apoptosis.
