Previous studies have observed reduced heart rate variability (HRV) in depression.

The effects of major depression and antidepressants on HRV were measured.

Unmedicated patients with major depression displayed lower HRV than controls.

Depression severity independently contributed to decreased HRV and vagal tone.

Compared with paroxetine, agomelatine had a more vagotonic effect.
