Using zircon U-Pb ages to constrain the provenance and transport of heavy minerals within the northwestern shelf of the South China Sea

1687 zircons from sediments on the SCS shelf were analyzed for U–Pb age. The age populations resemble those from South China, indicating their affinity. Various areas show distinct age populations, implying their different provenance. Sediment transport likely involved two hydrodynamic conditions. The sandy sediments in the outer shelf are modern sediments, not relict sediments.
