Influence of interlayer design on residual thermal stresses in trilayered and graded all-ceramic restorations

Evaluation of thermal residual stresses in graded ceramic restorations with different designs. Zirconia based restorations present significantly higher residual thermal stresses than alumina based ones. The interlayer can considerably reduce thermal residual stress at the interface between layers and at stress concentration points. Both composition and thickness of the interlayer have great influence on residual thermal stresses. The graded restoration showed the best thermal stress distribution, with reduced values at the framework and at the interface.
