Algal glycerol accumulation and release as a sink for photosynthetic electron transport

文摘
Glycerol production may avert photosynthetic downregulation. Glycerol accumulation and release may serve as a sink for products of photosynthesis. A marine alga accumulating high glycerol levels exhibited photosynthetic upregulation. A freshwater alga released considerably more glycerol than a marine alga under external salinity. Algae can continuously and efficiently produce glycerol to potentially fuel synthesis of biomaterials and bioenergy.
